A Shot to Save the World

It was 1952, and polio had reached outbreak levels in America. There was no known cause, no cure, and no help in sight for parents desperate to protect their children. Our nation's hope was placed in a 33-year-old scientist, working from a basement lab in Pittsburgh. His name was Jonas Salk, and in just a few years, he would bring infantile paralysis to its knees and change the course of medical history. Travel back to a world gripped in fear and see how Dr. Salk, with his dedicated staff, a young charity, and a faithful nation, came together to conquer polio.

ANP backs dialogue with Taliban

CHARSADDA: Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan said his party supported dialogue with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

“We were the first ones to hold talks with the Taliban in Swat and Buner. If the solution lies in talks we will support it.”

During a news conference, Wali announced that the party had dissolved committees at all levels across the country. According to the ANP chief, the party would undergo a massive reorganization in light of a fact finding report after the May 11 elections. "We went back to our workers and we are initiating ANP's reforms as per the suggestions of our members everywhere."

The ANP chief announced that an interim committee had been formed until intra-party elections were held in February 2014. He added that new office bearers would be elected during the elections through secret ballot.

"Party elections and all other organisational activities will take place strictly according to ANP's constitution."

The ANP chief said his party had accepted the results of the general elections despite rigging allegations for the sake of democracy. Wali further said that the ANP’s election campaign was hampered by terrorism.

Commenting on the situation in Karachi, Wali said not all Pashtuns in the city were from the ANP. “Our stance on Karachi has been that until there is deweaponization in the city the situation will not be resolved.”
